Outdoor Kiosks

KIOSK has over 100 years of combined experience designing and manufacturing outdoor kiosks. Outdoor kiosks are more complex than standard indoor kiosks and our expertise can help ensure your project is a success.

Please see below the Outdoor Kiosk Tips created by KIOSK to help illustrate some of the considerations when designing an Outdoor Kiosk. Our KT-111 Stealth Kiosk is often selected as the outdoor kiosk of choice by our customers.

Outdoor Kiosk Tips

  • Kiosk Design: An outdoor kiosk should be designed from the ground up as a watertight enclosure. All seams must be watertight and the inner walls must be insulated to protect internal devices from heat and cold. Outdoor kiosks must also have a more durable construction, as they will often be in unsupervised environments.

  • Kiosk Display: "Sunlight washout," or low visibility due to the sun, is a common problem for Outdoor kiosks. For example, when trying to read an ATM screen in direct sunlight, it is difficult to read anything on the screen. One way to address sunlight washout is with the use of high backlighting on LCD monitors. Unfortunately, high backlighting will add significantly to the cost of the LCD.

  • Heating and Cooling: Outdoor kiosks may require the installation of a heater and/or air conditioner. Maintaining an acceptable temperature and humidity level inside the kiosk is very important.

  • UL Testing:: Any kiosk placed outdoors MUST pass the official UL tests for outdoor electronic enclosures. These UL tests ensure that the units are waterproof, and more importantly, safe in the rain and snow. KIOSK will not build an outdoor unit without this testing due to liability issues.

  • PC Hardware: Because of the heat generated by the components inside the kiosk, KIOSK recommends the use of a very small form factor PC. This reduces the amount of heat that must be removed by an air treatment/conditioner system.

  • Kiosk installation: Installation is an often overlooked cost of outdoor kiosks.
    • Typically, outdoor kiosks are bolted to the ground, which means they must be mounted on a level surface.
    • The kiosk must also have power and connectivity delivered to it (frequently underground).
    • The power cables and connections will need to be watertight and in agreement with local electrical standards, which can vary from state to state.
    • Site preparation can be costly and time-consuming. Building permits, specific guidance from the state or local government, and many times from specific subcontractors, are necessary for installation of Outdoor kiosks.
