KIOSK INFORMATION SYSTEMS DEVELOPS RECRUITING
KIOSKS FOR DEFENSE DEPARTMENT
BROOMFIELD,
Colo. - Kiosk Information Systems recently announced the completion
of the design and manufacture of U.S. Department of Defense military
recruiting kiosks for venues such as shopping malls, movie theaters
and concert halls. The kiosks, called Interactive Billboards or
I-Boards, provide potential recruits with information on the active
and reserve branches of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force,
Coast Guard and National Guards. Approximately 75 Interactive Billboard
kiosks are being deployed at public locations nationwide. KIOSK created
the I-Board kiosks in partnership with Campbell-Ewald, a Detroit-based
communications agency assigned to manage the project.
KIOSK developed
a compelling kiosk enclosure designed to attract men and women ages
17-25 to the Interactive Billboard and encourage them to utilize
the kiosk to learn more about the Armed Forces. The kiosk contains
a film screen that displays a continuous DVD loop of action footage
from all of the military branches. A front panel features 10 large
buttons labeled for each active and reserve branch.
If a user is
interested in learning more about the Navy, for instance, he or
she simply presses the "Navy" button to interrupt the
generic film loop. A "virtual" Navy recruiter then appears
on the screen to talk about the benefits of enlisting and the opportunities
the branch offers. The presentation also directs viewers to a telephone
located on the side of the I-Board that is linked to a call center
where messages are logged and directed to recruiters who will respond
to viewers to discuss their interests in further detail.
KIOSK President
Rick Malone took an unconventional approach with the Department
of Defense I-Board in order to develop a custom-designed kiosk within
the Department's budget requirements. "The challenge of this
project was creating an attractive, portable and durable kiosk that
offered a large video presence," Malone said. "Everything
about the I-Board is unique."
One of the unique
aspects of the I-Board is that it doesn't contain a computer, which
is uncommon for self-service machines. The design also allows for
easy transport and 15-minute setup. And, the unit's internal technology
eliminates the need for an on-site kiosk administrator. A KIOSK control
board tracks usage statistics, reboots the unit on power failure,
administers DVD video clips through the projector system, and alerts
Campbell-Ewald immediately if any of the components malfunction.
"The I-Board
kiosks allow the Department of Defense to establish a presence at
comfortable environments such as the mall and the movies where our
target audience frequents," said Harvey Zuppke, a creative
director at Campbell-Ewald. "The goal of the new kiosk initiative
is to educate young adults about the different military branches
in a non-intrusive way that eliminates intimidation. KIOSK' eye-catching
design entices users to approach the kiosk, and the size and shape
of the unit make it easy to move and ship to the next location.
KIOSK also did a great job of developing a service neutral unit where
all branches are featured equally."
